Treasury's Geithner to visit Japan

Posted 2009/11/06 at 7:31 am EST

WASHINGTON, Nov. 6, 2009 (Reuters) — Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner will meet with Japanese government officials in Tokyo next week before attending the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation finance ministers meeting in Singapore, the Treasury said on Wednesday.

The visit to Tokyo marks Geithner's first trip to Japan since taking office in January. He will meet with senior government officials there "to discuss policies to bring about strong, sustainable and balanced growth," the Treasury said.

These same topics will come up at the November 12 APEC meeting in Singapore, along with trade finance, public-private models for financing large infrastructure projects and development of capital markets.

Both the Tokyo and Singapore meetings come on the heels of Geithner's trip to Scotland to attend a G20 finance ministers meeting this weekend.

Achieving a timeline for reforms to better balance the economy will be a key topic of discussions at that gathering, along with an emphasis on continued government support to foster economic growth.

Both the APEC and G20 meetings also will be attended by finance ministers from Japan, China, Australia and Indonesia, among others.
